Computer Vision Syndrome

As technology continues to control more of our lives, many of our patients at Henderson Eye Center are experiencing the symptoms of computer vision syndrome. Our optometrists in Henderson, TX, treat a wide variety of eye health conditions, which includes computer vision syndrome.

.

Causes

Computer vision syndrome is generally caused by the overuse of electronic devices. Our eyes do not struggle the same way they do on digital screens as they do on paper. Whether you use a phone, computer, or tablet, your eyes do not have the same contrast, which makes it difficult for your eyes to focus properly. Because of this struggle, your eye muscles flex continuously which can lead to the symptoms of computer vision syndrome.

Symptoms

Many of our patients suffering from computer vision syndrome experience digital eye strain. Some of the common symptoms include the following:

  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder or neck pain

At Henderson Eye Center, our optometrists provide treatment to reduce or eliminate these symptoms. Many of these issues are caused by improper viewing distance, poor lighting, glare, and uncorrected vision problems. This makes receiving regular eye exams more important when you work on a computer daily. The severity of your symptoms depends on your visual acuity and the time you spend using these devices. When you have a refractive error like farsightedness or astigmatism, you may be more likely to develop computer vision syndrome.

Tips for Eye Strain Relief

Profession eye care is preferred when dealing with computer vision syndrome, however, there are a few steps you can take at home that should help. We have gathered a few tips that should help.

  • Take a 20-second break and look at something at least 20 feet away every 20 minutes when you are using an electronic device.
  • Work on your posture. The position your monitor or laptop is in can affect how tired your eyes become. Always make sure that your computer screen is at least an arms-length away.
  • Use ambient lighting to help prevent eye strain.
  • Use an anti-glare screen to prevent the harmful effects of blue light on your eyes. Blue light glasses can also help filter this light.
