Keratoconus

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition in which there is an abnormal growth over the cornea of the eye. A loss of collagen over the cornea of the eye is the first sign of this disease, which begins in puberty and begins to progress into the late 30s.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this condition, as it is thought to be genetic in nature. However, there are effective treatments that can help prevent vision loss from Keratoconus. An eye doctor at our practice will be able to prescribe the proper treatment for you.

How Can an Optometrist Help?

Some of the symptoms of Keratoconus include:

  • Glare and halos
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Eye irritation
  • Cloudy vision

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to visit your optometrist as soon as possible. They will initiate a variety of exams, including a topography and slit-lamp exam to determine if your symptoms are being caused by Keratoconus or another eye health issue.

Afterward, your optometrist will be able to prescribe the proper treatment to help with your Keratoconus.

Vision Needs for People with Keratoconus

Although there is no complete cure for Keratoconus, a corneal transplant is one of the best treatment options to help reduce the progression of Keratoconus and reduce the risk of total vision loss.

In addition, people with Keratoconus will need to wear special contact lenses if they have another co-occurring eye disorder, such as myopia, hyperopia, or presbyopia. These are known as scleral lenses and fit over the entire cornea eye including the whites of the eye (the sclera).
