Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma Treatment at Henderson Eye Center

As we age, the risk of developing age-related eye conditions increases significantly. Research shows that out of 3 Americans above the age of 65, one has an eye condition. The most common eye conditions include cataracts, dry eye, and glaucoma. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision problems worldwide. At Henderson Eye Center, we can diagnose glaucoma before symptoms set in, allowing for better management of the eye condition. Our optometrists are dedicated to providing our patients the care they need to maintain their vision and eye health.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which sends images to the brain. Glaucoma causes an abnormal pressure build-up in the eye. As the fluids build-up due to poor drainage, the excess fluid increases intraocular pressure, damaging the optic nerve. Glaucoma comes in different forms, and if left untreated, it may cause total blindness. However, a visit to our optometry office will ensure a proper diagnosis of glaucoma and offer suitable treatment.

Diagnosing Glaucoma

A glaucoma test is painless and doesn't take long. It begins with our doctors using eye drops to dilate your pupils for a better view of your eyes. Our doctors will also check your optic nerve to examine possible damage. Special imaging tests may be requested to determine the extent of the damage. Our optometrists may also use a tonometry test to check your eye pressure.  Your visual field may be tested to see if you have lost any peripheral vision.

Treatment Options for Glaucoma

Glaucoma treatment varies from patient to patient, given the extent and type of the disease. Our optometrists start by conducting a comprehensive eye examination before administering any glaucoma treatment. So, depending on the results, treatment options may include:

Eye Drops

Eye drops work by lowering eye fluid production or increasing its outflow, lowering intraocular pressure in the process. You may experience eye irritation, distorted vision, allergies, and redness after using eye drops.

Oral Medication

Our eye doctor may prescribe pills like beta-blockers to reduce fluid production and enhance fluid outflow.

Laser Surgery

Surgery is the last option if other treatment options are not yielding intended results. We will recommend a professional eye surgeon for this procedure. Through a process called trabeculectomy, the doctor creates a new channel to encourage fluid outflow. They may also implant a tube to help drain excess fluid. This remedy is suitable for persons with open-angle glaucoma.

Iridotomy procedure is used for patients with angle-closure glaucoma. The eye surgeon makes a hole in the iris using a laser to help drain eye fluid. If surgery is the best option for you, our team will provide pre and post-op care to ensure optimal results.
